Icing testing reduces the risk of product failure in the field by assessing equipment's ability to withstand a build up of surface ice. The test is performed in a climatic chamber and replicates the formation of ice due to freezing rain, or from sea spray and splash.
Failures seen from this type of testing are varied, ranging from the binding of moving parts, structural damage, through to loss of visibility through windshields and optical devices.
TÜV SÜD engineers carefully build up ice by spraying water conditioned to just above freezing point over the equipment which is stable at a temperature below freezing. The water freezes upon impact on the equipment forming a layer of ice. Test specifications typically ask for 3 to 75 mm of ice build up.
