The centre of India’s leather industry
The Indian Leather Industry has experienced significant change, from being an exporter of raw materials in the 1960s and 1970s to an exporter of finished, value-added leather products today.
India is now the second largest producer of footwear and leather garments in the world. With an annual turnover of over US$ 7.5 billion, leather is among the top ten foreign exchange earners for the country. An employment intensive sector, the Indian Leather Industry provides jobs for about 2.5 million people, of whom approximately 30% are women.
In the Tamil Nadu region, the production hubs for leather and leather products are located in Chennai, Ambur, Ranipet, Vaniyambadi, Vellore, Pernambut, Trichy, Dindigul and Erode. The Vellore region is India’s largest exporter of finished leather goods, accounting for more than 37% of the country’s leather and leather-related exports.
The major industry of Ranipet is leather production, with 400 small and medium-sized leather businesses producing and selling both finished leather and leather articles such as shoes and garments for export. The leather industry is therefore a major lifeline for the town, which is part of a highly industrialized zone that has attracted attention from both domestic and international investors in the last decade.
