All products need testing, type examination and production control in order to gain approval.
Testing must be conducted against the latest versions of standards listed in the current MED amendment. Testing for most product types within the scope of TÜV SÜD BABT's appointment can be conducted by TÜV SÜD Product Service, a UKAS-accredited laboratory, which is TÜV SÜD BABT’s parent company. However, it is not mandatory to get your products tested by TÜV SÜD Product Service, any accredited test house or other test facility recognised under the RTF Scheme can be used.
Most products gaining type approval to the Marine Equipment Directive by TÜV SÜD BABT obtain an EC Type-Examination Certificatefor Module B and in parallel obtain a Production Quality Assurance Audit and Certificate (Module D). The approval is only granted when the Module B Certificate is listed on the relevant Module D Certificate.
Where a product has already been manufactured or where a Module D certificate cannot readily be progressed a Module F (Production Verification) certificate may be obtained. This will only cover a declared batch of products for which agreed sample testing has been conducted. The required testing and sampling are subject to agreement by TÜV SÜD BABT as part of the application process.
Other TÜV SÜD BABT options for Marine Equipment Directive compliance are: meeting the production phase requirements through a Product Quality Assurance Audit to Module E or meeting the requirements for Unit Verification (Module G) for one off special marine equipment for products with very limited production.
Marine Equipment Directive ‘Wheel Mark’
Equipment approved under the Marine Equipment Directive must be affixed with a ‘Wheel Mark’ followed by the Notified Body Identification Number and the year the wheelmark was placed on the product (normally the year of production). Certification carried out by TÜV SÜD BABT will be displayed as:
The characters “yy” shall be replaced by the last 2 digits of the year in which the Wheel mark was affixed to the product
The Wheel mark in respect of the Directive may only be applied to equipment for which a Declaration of Conformity exists and one of the following have been issued:
A valid Certificate of Conformity after compliance with the appropriate requirements Module B ( Type examination) and Production Quality Assurance (Module D); or
A valid Certificate of Conformity after compliance with the appropriate requirements Module B ( Type examination) and Product Quality Assurance (Module E)
a valid Product Verification Certificate (Module F) following a Module B Certificate
a Valid Unit Verification Certificate (Module G)
Note: The Wheel Mark may not be applied solely as a result of a Module B (Type Examination Certificate).
