TÜV SÜD Product Service gains formal accreditation as a CESG accredited TEMPEST testing facility
TÜV SÜD Product Service is now accredited by CESG, the UK’s National Technical Authority for Information Assurance, as a TEMPEST testing facility. It is one of only three accredited testing facilities in the UK responsible for issuing TEMPEST Certificates for products.
TEMPEST is a general term for naturally occurring and unintentional electromagnetic emanations from equipment and systems which can result in the spatial and conducted recovery of sensitive information from a distance. TEMPEST certification is based on testing to demonstrate conformity with verifiable and repeatable standards specified by CESG, and is underpinned by an effective quality management system.
The new scheme has been applicable since 1st September 2012 and seeks to achieve assurance based on compliance at every stage of a product’s life from its initial design onwards. It supports the Government’s UK Cyber Strategy, ensures that TEMPEST services comply with the updated NATO SDIP-55 standard and is compatible with the EU’s IASG4-04 standard.
A vendor will need to submit its product for testing by a CESG accredited facility like TÜV SÜD Product Service in order to achieve and maintain its certification, and will also have to undergo annual on-site inspections. The robustness of the scheme will be ensured by regular auditing of all three accredited facilities by CESG.
Vendors should see immediate benefits from the new scheme in terms of shorter certification lead times and will continue to benefit from the testing of their products by engineers qualified to CESG standards in an accredited screened enclosure. TÜV SÜD Product Service will be applying its usual technical competence, reliability and speed of delivery in providing this service and has already issued its first certificate under the new scheme.
