TÜV SÜD Product Service has launched its Dynamic Frequency Selection (DFS) testing service to ensure that wireless devices operating in the 5GHz band do not interfere with radar systems.
As the 2.4 GHz spectrum becomes increasingly utilised, wireless device and mobile phone manufacturers are developing products for the less populated 5GHz band. DFS stops such devices affecting radar systems as it continuously monitors for potential interference, ceasing transmission and switching to an alternative channel if it detects radar presence.
DFS applies to products using the 5250 – 5350 MHz and 5470 – 5750 MHz bands. Initially, the trend was to use the 5150 – 5250 MHz and 5725 – 5825 MHz bands where DFS does not apply. Changes in technology including increased bandwidth capabilities have driven the need for additional channel capacity and bandwidth, hence manufacturers increasingly implementing DFS in their products.
In conjunction with its newly acquired DFS capability, TÜV SÜD Product Service is well placed to offer a complete one stop solution for 5GHz products requiring testing and certification to EN 301 893 V1.6.1 (EU), FCC Part 15E* (USA) and RSS 210 (Canada) including EMC, Safety and SAR requirements. TÜV SÜD’s equipment has also been developed to test the new radar pulses for DFS as published in the recently updated version 1.7.1 of EN 301 893.
