Union Square Shopping Centre, Aberdeen for Hammerson plc opened in October 2009 providing Aberdeen with new shopping opportunities, a civic square and a transport hub linking the bus station and rail station to the city centre. The development combines traditional mall shopping with retail park terrace units built on the site of the former Network Rail goods yard. This development is one of the largest shopping centres in the UK and provides 50,000m² of mixed retail and leisure space with restaurant outlets, a multiplex cinema, a 203 bedroom hotel and 1,700 parking spaces.
Services, as would be expected for a project of this magnitude, required major upgrade of the public utilities. In addition to the usual shopping centre, services requirements, sustainable solutions were incorporated for low energy with natural ventilation for the mall areas, solar domestic water heating, daylight dimming and lighting controls. Heating is restricted to entrance area only, with underfloor heating and condensing boilers helping reduce the carbon footprint. Fully integrated IP infrastructure for smart metering, BMS, CCTV, intercom and retail comms links has also been incorporated providing future flexibility from a fibre optic backbone.
