One of the world’s most advanced bio-hazard containment facilities
We were appointment to undertake detailed design as part of the Design and Build contractor team for the new main laboratory building, energy centre and site mains. The brief was for an extremely resilient services provision to support research within very high containment laboratories. The services solutions are extremely complex, particularly the drainage and ventilation which are a significant and intrinsic part of the microbiological operational solution.
The main laboratory building has laboratories up to ACDP category 3 and SAPO category 4. The external fabric is being designed for minimal air leakage. The building has its own dedicated effluent treatment plant and all M&E plant has high levels of resilience.
Given the challenges of working to such a unique design brief, the necessity to get every design component flawlessly accurate was a major consideration for Shepherd. The collaborative partnership between Shepherd, The Pirbright Institute and the project supply chain, known as ‘Team Pirbright’, was also an integral factor in the overall success of the project.
