MEP, Energy & Sustainability
We are working with Robertson Capital projects to design the building services for the new 16,248m2facility at Kirkwall in Orkney which includes; primary care, emergency and elective diagnostic, emergency, high dependency, diagnostic and theatre facilities, outpatient, day care, inpatient services, Scottish Ambulance Service and NHS24 together with GP and Dental services.
Works also include multi-functional conference rooms, a restaurant, seating areas, shop, therapy garden, a children’s play area, extensive external facilities and a MacMillan unit which provides in-patient and out-patient treatment and day case treatments for cancer patients at the Balfour Hospital. The Macmillan unit works closely with the Cancer Centre in Aberdeen, GPs and allied health professionals.
The building offers opportunities for new ways of working with all clinical and educational areas having video conferencing facilities to support patients benefitting from services being delivered in Orkney and to ensure that staff link into training opportunities and health specialists nationally.
The building services provide robust, resilient, reliable and energy efficient solutions throughout. The project energy solution presents a unique opportunity to provide a hybrid heat pump solution that recognises Orkney unique location to benefit from renewable energy opportunities. It will achieve a balance between satisfying legislative procedures and the practical concerns of ensuring we have reliable resilience via the oil fired boiler plant. The Electrical system has been developed to include resilience and plant redundancy to meet both the healthcare standards and the islands geographical challenges.
