West One Shopping Centre LP appointed TÜV SÜD Dunbar Boardman to carry out a technical survey of 3 existing escalators within West One Shopping Centre, Mayfair, London due to ongoing reliability issues. The scope of the survey was to establish the existing equipment condition, remaining life expectancy and to recommend options for potential future works to ensure future long term reliability.
The survey results determined that all 3 escalators were obsolete with major core components approaching the end of their design life and requiring significant investment. TÜV SÜD Dunbar Boardman were appointed to project manage a new process of modernisation in the UK called In-Truss Replacement of the 3 escalators. The process involves installing a new escalator within the existing escalator steel work truss, whilst the shopping centre remained operational, in a busy city centre location with the main entrance from Bond Street underground station opening directly onto the escalators resulting in exceptionally high passenger footfall.
