Focussed predominantly on the £50 billion per annum global oil and gas subsea sector, a new Centre of Excellence will facilitate company-led industrial projects, development work with SMEs, hands-on training for the industry and academic research.
This new Multiphase flow measurement facility is being built to address the technical challenges of extreme subsea operating conditions and will explore the metrology and physics of higher pressure and temperature fluid flow. It will also be used for the technological development of instrumentation, sensors and data processing.
The centre will enable NEL to continue to provide innovative fluid flow technical services to the oil and gas production market for the next 25 years.
The facility is a pressurised, closed loop flow circuit which will offer a range of operating conditions for single-phase, multiphase and dry gas applications. The loop will be able to operate at pressures up to 150 bar and temperatures of 50 degrees centigrade. This, and the flowrates, gives it unique capabilities that are not offered at any other facility anywhere in the world.
