The current leisure centre in Clydebank, the Playdrome is less than 15 years old, however operational issues combined with the value of the site has provided an opportunity to replace the centre. The use of the river-front site alongside the new further education college, the Enterprise Centre and surrounded by a major new housing development provides an opportunity to establish a new collection of public activity facing the Titan Crane Across the Queens Basin. This approach allows the public face of Clydebank to be extended across the Glasgow Road to the waterfront and will assist in creating a new part of the town, linked to what remains of old Clydebank.
The client brief mainly addresses the idea of replacing most of the facilities currently provided at the Playdrome. The main spaces and facilities are listed below.
6 Court Multi-Purpose Hall, Dance and Aerobics Room (Multi-purpose), Combat Room (Multi Purpose), Climbing Wall (including 20m high leading wall), Climbing Wall (Instruction – 8m high), Large Fitness Suite, Squash Court, 25m 6 lane pool, Learners Pool (13x8m), Leisure Pool with flume slide, water features and wave machine, Sauna and Steam Room, Dry and Wet Village Changing Areas, Café, Admin Area, Staff Facilities, Plant Rooms and WCs.
