TÜV SÜD Wallace Whittle are employed by Pillar and Laing O’Rourke as Mechanical & Electrical Engineers for this large scale retail development, currently under construction in Glasgow.
The initial challenge was to re-engineer a patch of waste ground into a suitable site for construction, the site contained no useful infrastructure services and had electricity pylons with overhead HV power lines running through the proposed new buildings, then on to cross the M8 motorway. The source for the new electricity supply was on the other side of the M8 motorway.
These initial challenges were overcome by diverting the overhead power lines to underground. By thrust–boring under the motorway cables were installed without need for road closure. We then proceeded towards design and procurement of a 10MW electrical infrastructure to serve the Development.
The new services infrastructure comprises electricity (HV and LV), gas, water, telecoms and sprinkler/fire-fighting water services. Best value was obtained by constructing a ‘multi-utility’ package and tendering under the new de-regulated procedures. Significant savings were made by employing a utility company from another region to provide all adoptable services in common trenches.
