The Building Research Establishment's Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM) is the property industry's recognised benchmark for the environmental rating of new and major refurbished buildings. BREEAM addresses wide-ranging environmental and sustainability issues and enables developers and designers to prove the environmental credentials of their buildings to planners and to the market place.
The voluntary certification scheme aims to reduce maintenance costs, reduce running costs, provide affordable warmth and a healthy, comfortable internal environment.
The scheme can be applied to a wide range of projects - all building types, scale and procurement routes – and used for benchmarking purposes or for formal assessment as described below:
Design and Procurement – Design stage of a new development - (Interim certification)
Post Construction Review – Completed building - (Full certification)
BREEAM covers all aspects of the building design, construction, management processes and the wellbeing of the user. Credits are awarded in nine categories:
Health and Wellbeing
Land Use and Ecology
