TÜV SÜD Wallace Whittle were commissioned as services consultants for the development of a 100,000ft2 computer complex with special responsibility for the conceptual design of the energy centre, preparation of full design briefs for the design-build contract and for quality control of the installation as well as sanctioning of all design proposals.
The work involved:
(a) Computer Floor (100,000ft2), Offices (20,000ft2) and Energy Centre (25,000ft2).
(b) The final Brief of requirements included full details of all design elements of the contract, particularly for the energy centre elements but including: Security systems, Fire Alarm, Halon, Power, Air Conditioning, Energy Management System, devising Maintenance Schedules for equipment and CCTV, along with a working philosophy as to the expansion of each service to reach the expected work load condition in 1997.
(c) Responsibility for the preparation of the services design brief and involved in the selection and interview of prospective Design Build Contractors, along with sanction of all design, specification/drawings submitted for installation. Also engaged to act on behalf of GDS in a supervisory capacity throughout the construction phase providing, in addition, site Resident Engineering Staff.
A design build to MBF contract procurement method was utilised.
Special features included an 11kV distribution system, 4 MVA of UPS plant, 6 MVA of standby generation plant, 1 MVA frequency conversion plant and a £1M comprehensive security system.
