"The establishment and expansion of TÜV SÜD's Product Service Division is a corporate success story set against the backdrop of continuous growth in global production and trade", says Dirk Eilers, Member of the Board of Management of TÜV SÜD AG. "Our product testing laboratory opened in Munich 25 years ago with 57 staff. Today we have a global network of laboratories, with over 4,500 product testing professionals all over the world."
TÜV SÜD's Product Service Division supports manufacturers, importers and retailers in meeting statutory requirements and consumer expectations in international markets. It supports a wide range of industries, from household appliances to consumer electronics, medical devices, textiles, telecommunication equipment and food. In the past 25 years, the professionals of the TÜV SÜD Group have issued over 500,000 certificates. The Product Service Division holds around 100 national and international accreditations, notifications and recognitions, e.g. for medical devices, product safety and electromagnetic compatibility – to name but a few areas.
Internationalization as a growth driver
TÜV SÜD employs over 20,000 staff worldwide, generating over 38 per cent of its revenue abroad – and rising. "The need for internationalisation has probably been most evident in our Product Service Division", explains Member of the Board of Management Dirk Eilers, who has accompanied and influenced the establishment and expansion of the product testing business as one of the decision-makers for over 20 years. "Growth in global trade and shifting global production and supply chains have triggered a continuous rise in demand for our product testing and certification services.
Global network of expertise
"Globally, manufacturers, importers and retailers, are recognizing that prioritising safety and quality objectives will bring about tangible business benefits such as avoiding costly product recalls, accessing new markets and increasing product demand", says Ishan Palit, CEO of the Product Service Division at TÜV SÜD. "We are experts in all applicable national and international requirements and have comprehensive technical knowledge to support our customers in their businesses."
TÜV SÜD has also steadily expanded its global network of offices, laboratories and testing capabilities to meet this increasing demand. Focusing particularly on strengthening its presence in Asia, the Product Service Division has opened new laboratories in India (Ambur, Ranipet and Guargon), ASEAN (Bangkok) and China (Xiamen, Shenzhen, and Shanghai). TÜV SÜD now operates almost 200 product testing laboratories globally and is represented at a total of over 54 locations and 19 countries worldwide. "Our strategy is to create a network of modern and efficient testing infrastructure across all major manufacturing hubs, and effectively provide our customers with testing and product certification services at source." reports Palit.
Extensive range of services offered
Beyond expanding and strengthening its traditional product testing services, TÜV SÜD's Product Service Division is also positioning itself in new fields, for example Apparel and footwear, Food, Toys and Automotive components. TÜV SÜD is also the world’s leading Notified Body for the registration of medical devices. With over 420 professionals providing testing and certification services for medical devices, the Division today has a share of around 20 per cent in this market worldwide. In addition to medical devices, TÜV SÜD also provides testing and certification services for numerous products in the industrial electronics, machinery, telecommunications, photovoltaics and transport (automotive, aerospace etc.) industries.
One of the more recent focus areas concerns the testing and certification of food products. "As the world's population continues to grow and the supply chain becomes more complex, the risks associated with food supply is increasing exponentially", emphasises Ishan Palit "Recurring food scares and product recalls underline the necessity for end-to-end monitoring of production processes and supply chains." Thus, the group of companies will invest further in the expansion of its global network of food laboratories and the improvement of its services to the food industry. After the acquisition of SFDK Laboratório de Análise de Produtos in Brazil in 2012 and pH s.r.l in Italy in 2013, TÜV SÜD now counts 15 ultramodern laboratories, offering food-safety services in 25 countries.
