On 1 June 2018, the UK Measurement Strategy's Delivery Plan was published. The delivery plan sets out a body of work which directly responds to the themes of the strategy, which will support the UK to capitalise on its world-leading National Measurement System (NMS).
The NMS has a critical role in ensuring that the UK meets its international measurement needs, and in supporting the UK in critical policy, regulation, legislation and maintains sovereign capability. It will have a role in delivering and supporting the UK's Industrial Strategy by helping people develop new skills, provide services to businesses developing new technologies, and taking part in its Grand Challenges, such as Clean Growth and Artificial Intelligence.
The Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy invests £65m annually into the NMS, which funds research in the advanced manufacturing, life sciences and health, energy, environment and digital sectors.
"The Delivery Plan elaborates on how the measurement strategy is built upon the foundation of the UK’s Industrial Strategy (IS) and sets out how our world leading National Measurement System (NMS) will work to support industry and the wider economy within the UK." says Dr Martin Hanton, Head of R&D at NEL. "NEL is proud to be part of the NMS along with NPL, LGC, BEIS, NGML and NIBSC, and as we seek to tackle the four Grand Challenges of the IS which span broad sectors, we look forward to working collaboratively with our NMS partners and industry to deliver innovate new technologies that benefit society.”
