PEG and BEIS meeting drives forward alignment with UK Industrial Strategy
In early May, key management staff met with representatives from both the Programme Expert Group (PEG), which helps formulate the UK’s Flow Programme, and the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS). The meeting discussed how NEL’s activities can be further aligned to the UK’s overarching industrial strategy.
“We explained to the BEIS and PEG representatives the multiple ways in which we are already aligned with the strategy and, in particular, with the four Grand Challenges it contains,” says Head of Research and Development, Dr Martin Hanton, who attended the meeting with Managing Director, Dr Brian Millington. “We also obtained their approval for a range of future activities to enhance this alignment.”
The UK’s Industrial Strategy sets out a long-term plan to boost productivity and earning power. Its four Grand Challenges are: growing the artificial intelligence (AI) and data driven economy; clean growth; the future of mobility; and the ageing society.
“Looking forward, we agreed on a number of road-mapping and research projects to highlight opportunities in fields such as medical applications, artificial intelligence, the digital economy and clean fuels,” Martin adds. “For example, we are already engaging with industry on clean fuels and it is clear there is a significant need for more metrology research and investment in national infrastructure in this area.”
Explaining the benefits of road mapping, Martin says: “We recently carried out a road-mapping exercise that looked at NEL's role in the development of flow metering technology and standards over the last thirty years. This was extremely well received by both the PEG and by the BEIS and will soon be publicly available via our website. We now intend to continue this type of exercise to look at our future direction and its alignment with the UK's Industrial Strategy."
