A recent project, which helped a leading meter manufacturer to understand why its in-house calibration equipment was not functioning correctly, has highlighted the way in which NEL, as one of the lead organisations in the UK’s National Measurement System (NMS), is driving good flow measurement practice in industry.
“The client came to us because of some repeatability problems that had been highlighted in the operation of their water flow rigs,” says Principal Consultant, Norman Glen. “They asked us to investigate the situation and give them our recommendations on how to resolve it.”
The project included inspection of relevant facility documentation, including calibration certificates, maintenance records and uncertainty calculations. It also involved a site visit to inspect the water test rigs and to witness a calibration.
“The facility itself was fine apart from one or two minor technical issues,” says Norman. “The main problem related to the way in which they were running the calibration sequence. We made recommendations on how best to run calibrations and gave advice on how they should improve the information contained in their test reports. We are now hoping to work with them in the near future to provide training on relevant aspects of calibration.”
