The oil flow measurement facility has been used to help one of Europe’s leading manufacturers of measurement technology equipment assess the performance of an innovative thermowell design. This project highlights one of the many ways in which TUV SUD NEL helps companies benchmark performance of new and emerging technologies.
“WIKA asked us to conduct flow trial measurements on two thermowell designs,” says Project Engineer, Sandy Black. “One was a standard design and the other was a ScrutonWell® that employs helical strakes to dampen oscillations.”
“Our analysis showed that the ScrutonWell® was significantly more robust than the standard design,” Sandy adds.
The flow trials of the two thermowell designs were conducted in the oil flow measurement facility in East Kilbride. The tests were performed in an 8” NPS line, for a range of flow velocities.
The project was delivered in partnership with Doosan Babcock Ltd, world experts in vibration testing. Levels of vibration and dynamic stress, induced in the thermowells as part of the tests, were measured by Doosan using strain gauges and 3D accelerometer sensors.
The thermowells were installed in an 8” NPS spool piece with viewing sections designed by WIKA. This allowed for high speed videos of the behaviour of the tips of the thermowells to be recorded.
The research showed that the ScrutonWell® exhibited more than a 90% reduction in oscillation compared to the standard thermowell, in both in-line and transverse resonance regions.
A thermowell is a hollow piece of metal that protects temperature sensors that are installed in many industrial situations. The devices can, for example, protect temperature sensors from the negative effects of fluid flow, including corrosive media, physical impact, or higher-pressure gas or liquid. In addition, thermowells allow the removal of the temperature sensor for replacement, repair, or testing without the need to "open-up" the process.
