When oil is extracted from a well it typically exists as a “multiphase” flow, ie varying ratios of oil, water and gas. Solids (i.e. sand) may also be present. As fields become economically marginal, multiphase meters are increasingly used to reduce oil production costs within fields previously considered too expensive to exploit. Multiphase meters also allow real-time monitoring of oil wells, making production more efficient, and they can be deployed subsea to reduce the cost of pipe work infrastructure.
