TÜV SÜD PMSS is providing geotechnical and engineering support to Persimmon Homes at the former Billacombe Quarry at Plymstock, Plymouth. The site, a previously worked limestone quarry left derelict with two large ponds at its lowest point, has been abandoned for a number of years and will ultimately feature over 800 homes.
Persimmon Homes undertook a £16m mass earthworks filling project utilising rock fill, won from blasting and remodelling of the existing quarry faces. Filling was undertaken over an 18 month period during which TÜV SÜD PMSS geotechnical were tasked with providing geotechnical and engineering support in a Resident Engineer role. The project included blasting, screening, crushing and filling, as well as stabilisation using anchors, soil nails and reinforced earth.
Just over two years after the project start the Client is now mid-way through construction of Phase 1 of the residential housing planned for the site. TÜV SÜD PMSS continue to provide geotechnical and engineering support, and geo-environmental remedial measures required for the development.
